Unite wins Super-sized payout for McDonald's worker
Wed 10 Sep 08
A Kaiapoi McDonald's worker was recently awarded $15,000 after her employer was found by the Employment Relations Authority to have constructively dismissed their 18 year old employee, Chantelle Coup, after she joined the union. They were also found to have been destructive in their dealings with Unite Union and to have used undue influence to get their employees to resign from the union.
The restaurant manager was described in the Authority report to have been in a "position of significant influence" over their work. The boss, Patrick Cornish, was described as a "father figure", and it was acknowledged that McDonalds Kaiapoi is "part of a large and powerful organisation."
Naming and shaming bad employers – Vodafone fits the bill
Fri 3 Sep 10
Unite Union is accusing one of the country’s largest Telco’s – Vodafone – of being a bad employer after the highly profitable company refused a pay increase to most of its lowest-paid, most vulnerable employees for the second year running.
“Prime Minister John Key has challenges us to name and shame bad employers and Vodafone fits the bill”, says Unite National Director Mike Treen.
“This foreign-owned company’s commitment to making large profits far outweighs its commitment to its workforce.”
“Vodafone expects most of our union members employed at its contact centres in Auckland to continue going backwards despite the company having a tremendous year reaping windfall revenues off the back of Telecom’s XT troubles.”

Labour history made today as New Zealand has first Mall Strike
Wed 26 May 10

Labour history was made today as New Zealand has it's first Mall workers strike at midday. Workers in JB Hi-Fi in Albany, organised with the Unite Union, were on strike for better pay and against a culture of bullying and intimidation against union members.
"Our manager told me that I would never get a pay rise if I stayed with the Collective. There was a lot of pressure put on me to resign. Now they've cut down on the areas I used to sell on in our store. It's unfair- I'm rejoining the union and striking to stand up for my rights" said union member Jack Lucas.

“Cheating” provides government subsidies for security company
Tue 4 May 10
Unite Union has requested the New Zealand Qualifications Authority investigate the provision of training for security guards at Allied Security where staff undergoing training have been supplied with the answers to fill in “in their own words” (see email attached)
Following an email to site supervisors the staff undergoing training were provided with the Assessor Guides from which to copy the answers into their training booklets.
One of our members refused to complete the booklets by copying answers because she said it was “cheating” . She complained to the Union and we are now taking this up with the New Zealand Qualification Authority.
Unite has copies of the Assessor Guides (answers) and student booklets provided to these guards.
