Delegate training day a success
Twenty nine delegates from McDonald's, Skycity Cinemas, Berkeley's Cinemas, KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks joined organisers at Unite for a training day on Sunday 29 June.
The day covered some basics, including seminars on disciplinary procedures, collective bargaining, recruitment and on-site organising.
There was also a plenary session which covered the achievements this year in the fast food and cinema industries and report back sessions from the bargaining table.
Delegates had the chance to discuss how to resolve problems at work and how they can organise their sites better for negotiations. Problems were raised from across the industry including the loss of hours worked from the fast foods and problems with sick pay being paid out from the cinemas.
The day finished up with a discussion on how Unite can better improve the union representation for delegates and members.
Overall the feedback from the training sessions was positive and delegates said they felt encouraged by meeting others who experienced similar problems at their workplaces. Several sites have now planned how to organise and some people have volunteered to help organise non-union workplaces.
Unite will be organising more regular delegate training days based on industry and on the advice of delegates, which will possibly take the form of quarterly meetings.
